Abdominoplasty or Tummy Tuck is a procedure, which is used to make the abdomen thinner and more firm. This surgery involves the removal of excess fat from the middle and lower abdomen in order to tighten the muscle and fascia of the abdominal wall.

Types of Abdominoplasty:

  • Complete Abdominoplasty: This is a procedure in which, there will be a cut from one hipbone to the other. In this process shape of abdomen will be given by removing extra fat, skin, and tissue. This is a time taking procedure.
  • Partial Abdominoplasty: In this procedure, excess fat from the navel area will be removed. In this process belly button may not be moved. This procedure takes approx. two to three hours.

  • If you are a smoker than quit smoking, at least one month before the surgery.
  • Take healthy and well balanced diet, with complete meals. No need to take drastic diet before surgery.
  • Stop taking anti inflammations, herbal medicines, and other drug related supplements as per doctor’s advice.

Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) - During Procedure

  • Procedure will be done under general anaesthesia.
  • Hospital stay depends upon the type of case.
  • FOR COMPLETE ABDOMINOPLASTY: In this procedure, an incision is made from hip to hip just above the pubic area. Another incision is made to free the navel from the surrounding skin. Surgeon will cut the Stomach and then contour the skin, tissue, and muscles as needed. The surgery will involve movement in belly button. Patient may need drainage tubes under skin for few days.
  • FOR PARTIAL ABDOMINOPLASTY: This procedure is also known as mini- abdominoplasty. In this procedure surgeon most likely will not move patient’s belly button.

Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) - Post-Procedure

  • Bandage used after surgery will be a firm, elastic band that promotes proper healing.
  • Best sitting and sleeping posture will be advised by doctor.
  • Severely limit strenuous activity for at least six weeks after surgery.
  • Proper diet and exercise after returning to normal activities.
  • Avoid heavy lifting for at least five to six weeks after surgery.
  • Fully recovery takes three to six months.
  • Avoid all forms of nicotine for a month or longer during the recovery period.

Supportive abdomen binder or compression garment can minimize swelling/bruising and support the repaired tissues.
