Types of treatment provided for reconstruction:
SKIN GRAFTS: In this treatment skin is removed from one area of the body and transplanted to another.
There are two types of Skin Graft:
TISSUE EXPANSION (BALLOONING): Tissue expansion is a procedure that enables to grow extra skin to use in reconstructive procedures. Tissue expansion is done with the help of an instrument known as “BALLOON EXPANDER”, which is placed under the skin, near the area which is needed to be reconstructed. Over the time, balloons will gradually filled with saline solution, which helps skin to grow and stretch.
In this procedure, with the help of Dermatome (a special skin cutting instrument) skin will be removed from donor area, usually area hidden by clothing like, buttocks or inner thigh. After removing the area, graft will be placed with the help of stitches and dressing. Donor site will also be covered to prevent from infection.
In this procedure, with the help of balloon expander, extra skin will be grown by putting balloon expander under the skin near the area which is need to be repaired. With frequent time intervals balloons will be gradually filled with saline solution, which will help the skin to slowly stretch and grow. After growing sufficient skin, reconstruction process will be done. Tissue expansion will be nearly four to five months long process, it depends on the area to be reconstructed and size of balloons used.
