Chin Reshaping also known as Genioplasty or Mentoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape the chin either by enhancement with an implant or reduction on the bone. This surgery helps to provide harmonious balance to facial features so that person feels better about the way he/she looks. This procedure helps to brings chin into better balance with other facial features.

Chin Reshaping - Overview

Chin Reshaping also known as Genioplasty or Mentoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape the chin either by enhancement with an implant or reduction on the bone. This surgery helps to provide harmonious balance to facial features so that person feels better about the way he/she looks.

This procedure helps to brings chin into better balance with other facial features.

Sometimes chin implants are recommended along with nose reconstruction surgery (Rhinoplasty) in order to harmonize the different elements of the entire face.

There are three types of chin implant surgery:

  • Genioplasty: This procedure is a way of improving the weak chin. This procedure involves removal of a section of the jaw with an oscillating bone saw. The bone thereafter kept in the place with metal screws and plates providing a complete improved look to the patient.
  • Chin Reduction Surgery: This type of surgery is performed with the help of incisions in the chin and sculpting the bone while the excess of fat is removed from it.
  • Double Chin Plastic Surgery: In this type of surgery the excess skin and fatty tissues which causes double chin are removed. The Tumescent Liposuction is another treatment for removing the excess fat from chin through a small incision.

Chin Reshaping - Symptoms

  • People opt for Mentoplasty or Genioplasty (chin enhancement) to get their desired facial appearance.
  • For some people it is due to malformation or injury.

Chin Reshaping - Pre-Procedure

  • If you are a smoker than stop smoking before two weeks of the surgery.
  • Stop taking blood thinners, aspirin or anti-inflammatory before two weeks of surgery.

Chin Reshaping - During Procedure

  • Mentoplasty is a procedure which is basically performed as an Outpatient, means there is no need to stay in hospital overnight.
  • Procedure will be done under general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia.
  • At the time of procedure larger chin will be created by an implant insertion, which will elongate the lower jaw.
  • Smaller Chin will be made by reducing the size of the lower jaw.
  • A small cut will be there near the lower lip or from outside just below the chin for the insertion.
  • Stitches will be removed after five to seven days of the surgery.

Chin Reshaping - Post-Procedure

  • There will be some discomfort and swelling in the chin and jaw area for few days after procedure.
  • Patient will feel some difficulty in smiling and talking.
  • Liquid diet or soft food will be advised for few days as chewing will be restricted after the procedure.
  • Stitches will be dissolved in the period of ten days to two weeks after the procedure.
  • Gauze rolls to absorb any discharge or bleeding.

Significant complications of mentoplasty are infrequent. General complications are there like:

  • Infection
  • Reaction to anaesthesia
