Burns and scars reconstruction is a procedure performed for removal of the marks/ scars resulted from burns, surgery, accident or by birth. Major goal of the surgery is to enhance the function and restore the appearance of the skin.

Burns and scars reconstruction is a procedure performed for removal of the marks/ scars resulted from burns, surgery, accident or by birth. Major goal of the surgery is to enhance the function and restore the appearance of the skin.

Types of treatment provided for reconstruction:

SKIN GRAFTS: In this treatment skin is removed from one area of the body and transplanted to another.

There are two types of Skin Graft:

  • Split Thickness Grafts– In these grafts few layers of outer skin are transplanted.
  • Full Thickness Grafts– These grafts involves all the dermis.

 

TISSUE EXPANSION (BALLOONING): Tissue expansion is a procedure that enables to grow extra skin to use in reconstructive procedures. Tissue expansion is done with the help of an instrument known as “BALLOON EXPANDER”, which is placed under the skin, near the area which is needed to be reconstructed. Over the time, balloons will gradually filled with saline solution, which helps skin to grow and stretch.

Burns and Scar Removal - Symptoms

  • Patients choose this treatment willingly to get rid from burn marks and scars, to enhance their look.
  • Sometimes infection in scars and marks also lead to opt this treatment.

Burns and Scar Removal - Pre-Procedure

  • If you are a smoker than quit smoking before two weeks of surgery.
  • Vitamins will be prescribed by the doctor which need to be started few days before surgery.
  • Blood thinners, anti-inflammations, need to be stopped two weeks before the surgery.
  • For Tissue Expansion (ballooning) food diet and medicines will be prescribed by doctor for long term as it is a long process.

Burns and Scar Removal - During Procedure

  • IN CASE OF SKIN GRAFTS:

In this procedure, with the help of Dermatome (a special skin cutting instrument) skin will be removed from donor area, usually area hidden by clothing like, buttocks or inner thigh. After removing the area, graft will be placed with the help of stitches and dressing. Donor site will also be covered to prevent from infection.

 

  • IN CASE OF TISSUE EXPANSION (BALLOONING):

In this procedure, with the help of balloon expander, extra skin will be grown by putting balloon expander under the skin near the area which is need to be repaired. With frequent time intervals balloons will be gradually filled with saline solution, which will help the skin to slowly stretch and grow. After growing sufficient skin, reconstruction process will be done. Tissue expansion will be nearly four to five months long process, it depends on the area to be reconstructed and size of balloons used.

Burns and Scar Removal - Post-Procedure

  • After surgery dressing will be there for five to seven days depends on the area treated.
  • Recover period for Skin graft surgery is three to five weeks, depends on type of graft done.
  • After removal of dressing patient have to wear splints for few days.
  • Physical therapy or Occupational therapy may be required for weeks or months for better recovery.
  • After complete process patient will notice changes in colour of the skin, appearance.
  • Patient to need to keep monitoring perfusion (passage of fluid) at surgical site.
