Hair Transplantation - Overview

Hair Transplantation is a most common cosmetic surgery process which involves removal of hair follicles from any site in the body, like: face or legs and planting them on the hairless portion of head. This process is also used in transplanting hair in eyelashes and brows.

The two types of transplant procedures are: slit grafts and micro grafts.

Slit grafts contain 4 to 10 hairs per graft. Micro grafts contain 1 to 2 hairs per graft. It depends on the amount of coverage needed.

The latest technology used for hair transplantation is called FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction), which is an advanced surgical hair restoration technique. This surgical technique does not leave any linear scar and does not require any stitches.

Hair Transplantation is needed to be done when a person faces access of hair fall.

Hair Transplantation - Pre-Procedure

  • Be sure to inform your doctor about the medicines you are taking. Doctor will stop the medicine needed to be stopped before procedure.
  • Before a week of procedure, stop taking nicotine products and alcohol.
  • Use of antibiotic to avoid infection as decided by doctor.
  • On the day of procedure, take shower and wash your hairs with regular shampoo. Make sure not to use any kind of hair spray or lotion.
  • If you are a smoker, avoid smoking day prior to surgery.

Hair Transplantation - During Procedure

  • Initial step for hair transplant surgery is to remove hair follicles from the back of the head and relocate at the balding area.
  • Before starting the surgery, donor area needed to be trimmed.
  • After trimming hairs from donor area, anaesthesia is given in that place.
  • Tissues of the donor area which contains the bald resistant hair follicles needed to be removed surgically and donor area will be sutured.
  • Sutures of donor area will be hidden from the patient’s hair that are combed over them. Sutures will be removed almost after ten days after the procedure.
  • With the help of microscopes, surgeons will view the donor tissue for dissecting and preparing follicular units for hair grafts.
  • After giving local anaesthesia to the patient, the balding recipient area is prepared for the procedure.
  • Follicular unit grafts will be placed in the tiny incisions that are made in an irregular pattern in the recipient area.
  • Smallest grafts will be placed in front of the hairline and three and four will be placed behind.
  • After the procedure tiny incisions with short hair would be visible on the patient’s operated area.
  • Incision marks will be healed naturally and redness in the recipient area vanishes itself within a week.

Hair Transplantation - Post-Procedure

  • Avoid dirt for 2 weeks post-surgery.
  • Cover your head while going out.
  • Do not touch the donor area or the transplanted grafts to reduce the chance of infection.
  • Report your doctor if there is any redness and swelling around surgical site.
