A spine surgery is one of the complex surgeries nevertheless; a properly executed surgery can help you restart your daily lifestyle. It is a unique sub-specialty of orthopedic and neurosurgical surgery. The department’s spine specialists offer a range of spinal surgeries with an aim to relieve pain, stabilization of spine and decompression of spinal cord/nerves.

Spine Surgery - Overview

A spine surgery is one of the complex surgeries nevertheless; a properly executed surgery can help you restart your daily lifestyle. It is a unique sub-specialty of orthopedic and neurosurgical surgery. A Spine Surgery is performed to restore and preserve a spine functioning by managing various spinal disorders. This is a surgical specialty that includes both operative and non-operative treatment modalities. The department’s spine specialists offer a range of spinal surgeries with an aim to relieve pain, stabilization of spine, and decompression of spinal cord/nerves. But before taking such a major decision, it is important to understand what goes into this surgery.

There are three types of spine surgeries which include:

Cervical Spine Surgery– This is caused by an abnormality in one or more discs – the cushions that lie between the neck bones (vertebrae). This type of surgery is recommended to relieve neck pain, tingling, numbness, and weakness, restore nerve function and stop or prevent abnormal motion in your neck.

Lumbar spine surgery – This is a decompression surgery that is used to treat compressed nerves in the lower (lumbar) spine. This surgery is recommended only when non-surgical treatments haven’t helped. This surgery aims to improve symptoms such as constant pain and numbness in the legs caused by pressure on the nerves in the spine.

Thoracic spine surgery This surgery is an effective treatment for mid-back pain, but should only be considered if any other treatment options have failed to provide relief. The thoracic spine is the middle area of the back and is made up of twelve vertebrae; T1 through T12.The thoracic spine is the main support sy involved in activities like twisting and bending so if you have any serious issue in the middle area of your back you should consult a doctor as soon as possible.

Spine Surgery - Symptoms

Spine surgery is recommended by the doctor in the following cases:

  • Muscle spasms either with activity or at rest
  • Pain that continues for a maximum of 10-14 days
  • Hardness in the low back area, restricting the range of motion
  • Not able to maintain normal posture due to stiffness and/or pain

Spine Surgery - Pre-Procedure

Before a spine surgery usually, the patient is admitted to the hospital a day before the operation will take place. The operation is performed on the next morning. The patient has to spend 1-5 nights after the operation in the hospital, depending on the type of surgery he/she will undergo e.g. it is possible that the patient may be discharged after a day or so following micro-surgery for slip disc, or in some cases may have to stay longer for major decompression and/or fusion surgery. Depending upon the nature of the injury the patient is suffering from; the surgeon will suggest an appropriate spinal cord injury treatment.

The most commonly recommended surgery for back pain is Spinal fusion in which your surgeon joins the vertebrae together. One of the key reasons which invite such surgery is smoking.

Spine Surgery - During Procedure

There are different types of spine surgeries the most common minimally invasive back surgeries include:

Discectomy: This surgery involves Trimming or removing bulging disks in your spine. It is performed when the cushion separating your vertebrae dislocates or slips out. In this procedure, the surgeon will remove the disk either completely or in parts. In some cases where the disk is fully damaged, the surgeon may even have to replace it, which is known as Disk replacement.

Foraminotomy: This surgery is used to relieve pain connected with a compressed nerve in the spine. In this surgery the surgeon cuts the sides of the bones of your vertebrae thereby leaving sufficient space at the junction where the nerves leave the spine. This surgery is performed collaboratively with spinal fusion surgery.

Spinal fusion: This surgery involves pinning unstable joints to those around them to ease the pain. It is performed to join together two bones (vertebrae) of the spine resulting in zero movements between them. This results in relieving pain from the spinal segment. In some selected cases, such procedures are conducted through ‘Minimally Invasive Key Hole Techniques’ (MITLIF). When required, open techniques are also used.

Spine Surgery - Post-Procedure

Now, the majority of the people who undergo this spine surgery show no signs of any complications because of the technological advancement in the field of medical science. Nevertheless, in some of the few cases, there may arise some kind of complications like bleeding, nerve damage, infection, blood clots particularly in your lungs and legs, etc. It may also result in a heart attack or a stroke in extreme cases.

Spine Surgery - Risk & Complications

Most people who undergo spine surgery have minimal, if any, complications. That said, any operation has some degree of risk, following are some risks that may appear after the spine surgery:

  • Blood clots, for instance in your legs or lungs
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Herniated disk
  • Damage in the Nerve, which can lead to weakness, paralysis, pain, sexual dysfunction, or loss of bowel or bladder control.
  • Reaction to anesthesia or other drugs
  • Bleeding
  • Infection
