Vaginoplasty

Vaginoplasty is a procedure which is also known as posterior colporrhaphy (surgical procedure to repair defects in wall of vagina). This procedure is designed to tighten the vagina. The goal of vaginoplasty is to address sagging vaginal structures, reduced sensation due to multiple vaginal deliveries, vaginal deformations, lack of vaginal strength and tone, or unsightly tissue protrusion from the vagina.

Vaginoplasty - Overview

Vaginoplasty is a procedure which is also known as posterior colporrhaphy (surgical procedure to repair defects in wall of vagina). This procedure is designed to tighten the vagina. The goal of vaginoplasty is to address sagging vaginal structures, reduced sensation due to multiple vaginal deliveries, vaginal deformations, lack of vaginal strength and tone, or unsightly tissue protrusion from the vagina.

Vaginoplasty - Symptoms

  • After childbirth, women may complain of vaginal laxity (looseness), resulting from stretching of tissues and separating of muscles.
  • Some women experience vaginal loosening with age and feels uncomfortable wearing tampons or engaging in sexual activity, goes for this surgery.

Vaginoplasty - Pre-Procedure

  • To undergo vaginoplasty, patient will be advised to do a bowel prep prior to surgery.
  • Stop taking blood thinners, two weeks prior to surgery.
  • If you are a smoker than stop smoking four weeks before the surgery.
  • Do not shave the pubic region within two days of surgery.
  • No intake of Alcohol within two days of surgery.

Vaginoplasty - During Procedure

  • This procedure is performed under local or general anaesthesia.
  • First amount of tightening will be decided, after that a pie shaped wedge will be marked to delineate the extra skin, which will be removed from opening of the vagina.
  • After that, beneath the skin, tissues will be tightened with the help of strong sutures.
  • After tightening of vaginal canal, mucosal skin will be separated from vaginal muscle.
  • Vaginal canal muscles and opening muscles will be tightened.
  • There will be dissolvable internal and external sutures to close incision.

Vaginoplasty - Post-Procedure

  • Immediately after the surgery patient will feel soreness and discomfort.
  • There will be vaginal discharge for several days.
  • Patient can return to work after one week of surgery.
  • Depending on the tightening performed, some patients may be instructed to use dilators.
  • Avoid strenuous activity for six weeks
  • Avoid swimming or bike riding for three months
  • Use donut ring while sitting to avoid pressure on surgical site.
  • Avoid smoking for at least one month after surgery.
  • Labial swelling is normal and will gradually resolve within six to eight weeks of surgery.
  • Patient should avoid penetrative sexual intercourse for six of surgery.
